COLORBOND steel fence in a neutral colour

Colour is the fun part — and the part people agonise over. COLORBOND® steel comes in a broad palette, and the right choice ties your fence into the house, the garden and the street. Here is the full Classic range and a no-stress way to narrow it down.

The Classic range at a glance

The core Classic finish runs to 22 colours. Grouped roughly by tone:

  • Whites & light neutrals: Dover White™, Surfmist®, Southerly®, Classic Cream™, Evening Haze®, Paperbark®.
  • Mid greys & greens: Shale Grey™, Bluegum®, Windspray®, Dune®, Wallaby®, Pale Eucalypt®, Cottage Green®.
  • Warm earths: Jasper®, Gully®.
  • Darks & charcoals: Basalt®, Woodland Grey®, Ironstone®, Deep Ocean®, Monument®, Night Sky®.

If you just want a safe, on-trend choice, most new fences in the south-east land on one of these:

  • Monument® — near-black charcoal, modern and recedes into the background.
  • Woodland Grey® — deep grey-green, the classic "disappearing" fence colour.
  • Basalt® — mid-to-dark grey with a slightly warm tone.
  • Surfmist® — soft off-white, brightens a space and suits coastal or Hamptons looks.
  • Dune® — warm mushroom-grey neutral that goes with almost anything.

How to choose (a simple method)

  1. Start with your house. Pull a colour from the roof, gutters, window frames or render — matching or complementing one of these instantly looks intentional.
  2. Decide feature or fade. A dark colour like Monument® makes a garden pop and the fence recede; a light neutral like Surfmist® feels open and bright.
  3. Think about heat and dirt. Darker colours show less dust and marks but sit hotter in full sun; lighter colours stay cooler but show more.
  4. Look at the street. Glance at neighbouring fences — you often want to sit comfortably alongside them, not clash.
  5. Check a real sample. Screens and prints never match steel exactly. Always look at an actual sample in your own light before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

How many COLORBOND fence colours are there?

The COLORBOND® steel Classic finish range has 22 core colours, from light neutrals like Surfmist® and Dover White™ through to dark charcoals like Monument® and Night Sky®. Some products and finishes offer additional or matt-finish options. Availability of specific colours can vary, so check with us before specifying.

What is the most popular COLORBOND fence colour?

Dark neutral greys are the most popular for fencing — especially Monument®, Woodland Grey® and Basalt®. They look modern, hide marks well and let gardens stand out. Soft neutrals like Surfmist® and Dune® are also common where a lighter, brighter boundary is wanted.

Do dark COLORBOND fences get hot?

Darker colours do absorb more heat in direct sun than lighter ones, so a dark fence will feel warmer to the touch on a hot day. For most boundary fences this is not a practical problem, but if the fence sits against plants or a seating area in full afternoon sun, a mid or lighter tone can be worth considering.

Should my fence match my roof or my house?

A reliable approach is to pull the fence colour from your roof, gutters or window frames so it reads as part of the home. Matching the roof is a safe, cohesive choice; a contrasting darker fence can also work well as a backdrop for the garden. Always check a real sample in your own light first.
